Bangladesh has participated for the first time in the 60th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO-60), being held in Moscow, Russia, from 15 April to 23 April.
Organised jointly by Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Melnichenko Foundation, the prestigious competition has brought together around 200 young chemists from approximately 38 countries.
The Bangladesh team is led by Professor Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chittagong.
Professor Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin told The Business Standard, “Participating in this prestigious international platform for the first time is a matter of great pride for us. Our students are determined to prove their capabilities despite the intense competition.”
“We are hopeful that they will not only achieve good results but also convey a positive message about Bangladesh’s potential by competing with the world’s best,” he added.
Representing the country are Md Najib Mahmud of Notre Dame College and Tahiyat Islam Ariba, a second-year HSC student at Cantonment English School and College.
Both earned their place on the international stage after emerging as winners of the Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad at the national level.
The Olympiad is considered one of the most challenging chemistry competitions for students worldwide. Participants are required to sit for two five-hour theoretical examinations and one five-hour practical test.
Alongside the competition, organisers have arranged visits for participants to some of Russia’s historic and significant landmarks, including the Kremlin, Red Square, and the Russia National Centre.
The Russian government is bearing all expenses for the Bangladesh team’s participation.
This year’s 60th edition holds special significance as the diamond jubilee of the International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad. Winners will receive the prestigious “Academic Valery Lunin Award.”
