Police arrested an absconding accused in the lawyer Saiful Islam Alif murder case yesterday (20 April ) from the Bandar Road area under Kotwali Police Station of Chattogram city.
The accused, identified as Lala, 43, is a resident of the Methor Colony in the Sebok Colony area and the son of the late Gangadeen Methor.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, Mohammad Aftab Uddin, said, “The arrest was made using information technology and intelligence-led operations. Following his detention, Lala was produced before the court.”
Police added that a special drive to apprehend other suspects is ongoing.
With this latest arrest, the total number of suspects detained in the Alif murder case has risen to 14.
Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked and beaten to death on 26 November 2024 within the Chattogram court premises. Following the incident, his father, Jamal Uddin, filed a case at Kotwali Police Station, naming 31 individuals as accused.
On 1 June 2025, the investigating officer, then Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Mahfuzur Rahman, submitted a charge sheet against 39 accused.
The court subsequently accepted the charge sheet on 25 August, the same year.
