The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has installed 450 solar-powered LED street lights in the Bhashantek slum area to ensure citizen safety and improve night-time movement.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan inaugurated the newly installed solar street lights near Gate No 2 of Bhashantek Benarasi Palli yesterday evening.
He said the initiative is part of efforts to implement commitments made by the government, adding that the lights have been installed for public benefit.
“These lights were installed with public funds. They are your assets, and you must take responsibility for their maintenance,” he told local residents.
He also said that priority would be given to solving the problems of low-income communities, urging people to cooperate with those working for development.
Special Guest Abdur Rahman Sani, assistant private secretary to the prime minister, said efforts are underway to improve living conditions in the area and curb crime.
“We want to stop drugs, theft and robbery from this area,” he said, urging residents to safeguard the installations and increase social awareness, including monitoring harmful online activities.
According to DNCC, the project aims to improve safety and mobility for around 150,000 low-income residents in the area.
The installation of solar-powered LED lights is also expected to reduce dependence on the national grid and save around 58,320 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman presided over the event.
