A Dhaka court today (18 April) sent content creator AM Hasan Nasim to jail in a case filed over allegations of spreading misleading information on social media about the chief whip of parliament.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order, rejecting bail and a remand petition.
Earlier, police produced Nasim before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Raihanur Rahman of the Detective Branch, said the accused had initially confessed to involvement during preliminary questioning.
The defence counsel, Zahirul Islam, sought cancellation of the remand and applied for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court rejected both pleas and ordered that the accused be sent to jail.
Nasim was arrested on 17 April at around 8pm from a rented house in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital.
According to the case statement, the allegations stem from a Facebook post made on 11 April, which contained misleading and defamatory content about Barguna-2 lawmaker and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni.
The post was allegedly intended to blackmail the chief whip. The same account later published and circulated further misleading information at different times.
The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Cyber Security Ordinance by Md Nazrul Islam, a supporter of the chief whip.
