A 55-year-old man was beaten to death during a local arbitration meeting in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram on Friday (17 April).
The incident occurred around 3pm in the North Ambariya area under Khaiyachhara Union. The deceased was identified as Md Shafiul Alam.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Mirsarai Police Station Farida Yasmin said police recovered the body and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
“Legal action will be taken after investigation,” she added.
On-duty physician Dr Mahamuda Akter said the victim had multiple injuries on his body, including a severe head wound.
“He died before being brought to the health complex,” she said.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions had been escalating since Thursday afternoon when Fakir Ahmed, nephew of the victim, was assaulted and left injured by three local men identified as Rikky, Rifon and Rizvi.
Locals arranged an arbitration meeting on Friday to address the dispute. During the meeting, the accused launched a sudden attack on Shafiul using locally made weapons.
The victim’s son, Md Arafat Hossain, alleged that the accused had been creating fear in the area.
“They regularly abuse drugs and are involved in various crimes. They assaulted my cousin earlier this week. When an arbitration meeting was called to resolve the matter, they attacked my father with sharp weapons and fled after threatening locals,” he said, demanding justice.
