A fire that broke out at a multi-storey building in Dhaka’s Banani area this evening (15 April) was brought under control after nearly two hours.
Seven firefighting units brought the fire under control around 8:15pm, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The blaze was reported around 6:30pm on the 11th floor of a building located at House 44, Road 12, near Banani Kacha Bazar.
The first firefighting unit reached the scene at around 6:45pm.
The origin of the fire and any casualties could not be immediately confirmed.
Meanwhile, Abdur Rahman Sani, assistant private secretary to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, visited the scene.
Speaking to reporters, he said the prime minister was informed during an ongoing parliamentary session and immediately directed the fire service to respond swiftly to minimise damage.
“The prime minister sent me personally to monitor the situation. He has also sent his personal doctor. We kept ambulances and hospitals ready,” Sani said.
He added the fire broke out in several clothing shops inside the commercial building and that, so far, there had been no reports of casualties or injuries.
“We have seen that the damage is limited and no one has been injured,” he said.
