Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is set to be made an accused in a crimes against humanity case over the killings at Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on 5 May 2013.
The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has found his involvement in the incident.
Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Aminul Islam confirmed the development to journalists today (15 April).
According to the prosecution, the investigation agency found evidence linking Mamun, then a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) official, to extrajudicial killings during Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally at Shapla Chattar in 2013.
The chief prosecutor said it was not yet possible to disclose all the names of those who will be made accused.
However, involvement of several officials, including then IGP Mamun, has been found. “We hope to receive the full report within the next few days. The investigation agency is working on it,” he said.
Aminul Islam said those involved in the killings would not be spared.
He said the incident had shaken global conscience and anyone found involved in crimes against humanity would be brought to justice, whether civilians or members of law enforcement agencies.
The case is currently under investigation.
The tribunal had earlier set 5 April for submission of the report, but later rescheduled it to 7 June following a prosecution plea.
Six people have so far been arrested in the case.
They are former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general (DIG) Molla Nazrul Islam, Shahriar Kabir, president of the advisory council of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and former deputy inspector general Abdul Jalil Mondal.
Mamun is currently in jail serving a five-year sentence in another crimes against humanity case over the July-August mass uprising, where he turned a prosecution witness against Sheikh Hasina.
