Cumilla-4 Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah today (14 April) paid a visit to the residence of former Chattogram City Corporation mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam, where a group identifying themselves as “July fighters” gathered outside and later surrounded him, raising various questions as he exited the house.
Videos circulating on social media show several individuals questioning why he visited the residence of someone accused of being an “associate” of the Awami League, particularly after Hasnat had previously demanded in parliament that the party be banned.
In the footage, Hasnat, also chief organiser (South) of National Citizen Party (NCP), is seen gesturing with his hand in an apparent attempt to calm the situation.
Regarding the matter, Ridwan Hridoy, coordinating member of NCP Chattogram metropolitan unit, told journalists that Hasnat visited Chattogram for personal reasons and accepted the former mayor’s invitation out of courtesy.
“It was a courtesy meeting, nothing beyond that,” he said.
Manjur Alam said, “MP Hasnat Abdullah came to my residence. It was a courtesy visit, nothing more,” adding that no political discussions took place.
However, a press release issued later in the day by NCP said the meeting included detailed discussions on the country’s ongoing political situation, increasing public engagement, and future organisational activities.
The statement also expressed hope for continued mutual cooperation in the days ahead.
