A video showing a man being tied up and beaten by a mob over allegations of theft in Chattogram’s Rangunia has gone viral on social media.
The footage, which surfaced yesterday (13 April) from a Facebook page named “Hasan Bhai”, quickly spread online.
Commenting on the matter, Rangunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Arman Hossain said, “We have not yet received any complaint about such an incident. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed.”
In the video, the man is seen bound with a rope to the door of a building, while around 50 to 60 people stand surrounding him.
At least two to three individuals are seen beating him with wooden logs and sticks.
Locals alleged that the youth had stolen a battery and some electrical equipment from a mosque in the area. However, throughout the assault, he is repeatedly heard pleading his innocence.
The footage also captures bystanders questioning him during the beating. At one point, someone asks, “Did you steal the battery?” to which the man cries out, “I did not steal.”
At another moment, he is threatened with having his nails pulled out.
In the final part of the video, a person speaking in the Chattogram regional dialect is heard saying, “The thief was caught while trying to steal a battery and machine from the mosque. Share this video widely. If you see the thief in your area, beat him.”
