A bus collided head-on with a CNG-run autorickshaw in Raozan upazila of Chattogram late last night (12 April), killing the autorickshaw driver and injuring three passengers.
The accident triggered a protest, during which protestors set fire to two buses.
The accident occurred around 10:30pm in the Miarghata Brickfield area under Urkirchar Union along the Chattogram–Kaptai road, according to police and local sources.
The deceased driver was Muhammad Nazrul Islam, 40, a resident of Mirdharpara village in West Guzra Union.
The three injured passengers were sent to the hospital.
Sub-Inspector Mamun Bhuiyan of the nearby Noapara police outpost said the Kaptai-bound bus collided head-on with the autorickshaw, which was heading toward the Kaptai Road intersection.
The impact left the autorickshaw mangled, killing the driver on the spot, he added.
Following the accident, angry locals set fire to a bus belonging to Saudia Paribahan. At the same time, another bus was set on fire, which witnesses identified as belonging to Karnaphuli Paribahan.
Eyewitnesses said both buses were still burning until around 11:45pm.
Law enforcement agencies were working to bring the situation under control, police said.
