At least 19 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of Dhaka, during an event marking the announcement of the party’s Dhaka North district committee and the inauguration of its Dhamrai upazila office.
The incident took place at the Kalampur bus stand area this afternoon (10 April).
Dhamrai Police Station Office-in-Charge Nazmul Huda Khan said police visited the scene immediately after the clash, but no formal complaint has yet been filed.
“Legal action will be taken once a complaint is lodged,” he added.
According to local sources, the clash occurred between leaders and activists of a faction of the NCP’s Dhaka North district committee and members of the party’s Dhamrai upazila unit. Both sides have accused each other of initiating the attack.
Nabila Tasnid, convenor of the NCP’s Dhaka North district committee, claimed the violence stemmed from resentment among those who would lose influence due to the new committee formation.
She said at least 10 members of the newly formed committee were injured.
On the other hand, leaders of the Dhamrai upazila unit said they learned about the inauguration of a new office in Kalampur through a WhatsApp group only a day earlier, which angered them as an existing office has been operating in Dhulivita bus stand area since the 2024 mass uprising. They alleged that when they sought clarification at the event, they were attacked.
Israfil Islam Khokon, NCP Dhamrai upazila unit’s chief coordinator, said around nine of their activists were injured in the incident.
He also alleged that the Dhaka North committee was formed earlier this month without consultation with key leaders from Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai units, which had already created tension within the party.
