Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam today (10 April) announced that the city corporation will plant 300,000 trees over the next five years in areas under its jurisdiction.
He made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a tree plantation programme held at the University of Dhaka this morning, reads a press release.
The programme was organised with the support of Srijoni Bangladesh.
“There is no alternative to tree plantation to save lives and protect the environment. Therefore, the prime minister’s nationwide tree plantation campaign must be transformed into a mass movement,” the administrator said.
He said in line with the prime minister’s initiative, the city corporation has taken a plan to plant 300,000 trees during the 2026-2030 period, with an average of 60,000 trees every year.
To achieve the target, it has taken an initiative to establish a modern nursery under its own management. In addition, the city corporation will implement a ‘Zero Soil’ project under an agreement with the Forest Department, which will help cover road medians and traffic islands with grass and trees.
