A passenger allegedly killed a rickshaw-van driver by striking him on the head with a brick after he refused to take him home in Mohanpur of Rajshahi this morning (10 April).
The incident took place in Belgachhi village under Mougachhi union of Mohanpur upazila.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sabina Yasmin, Rajshahi district police spokesperson, said that around 8:30am, Mojibur Rahman, 50, of Belgachhi village, asked local battery-run rickshaw-van driver Alamgir Mondol, 53, to take him home.
When Alamgir refused, an argument broke out between the two. At one stage, Mojibur allegedly hit Alamgir on the head with a brick.
Alamgir was later taken to the local upazila health complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, locals detained Mojibur at the local Belgachhi library.
When police arrived at the scene after receiving the information, tensions briefly rose among locals.
The situation was later brought under control, and police took Mojibur into custody.
Sabina Yasmin said police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
The body will be sent to the hospital for an autopsy, and preparations are underway to file a case, she added.
