Representatives of foreign businesses in Bangladesh have called on the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to move beyond the mindset of viewing all businesspeople with suspicion.
The appeal was made during a pre-budget meeting at the NBR headquarters in the capital’s Agargaon today (6 April), organised by the Foreign Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Rupali Haque Chowdhury, president of FICCI, said, “Equating businesspeople with thieves must end. This blame game has to stop.”
She further said, “You must place some trust in us. Not all of us can be held accountable for the actions of a few.”
The meeting was attended by NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan and other senior officials.
During the session, he acknowledged certain internal challenges and capacity constraints.
Abdur Rahman Khan also highlighted several initiatives and steps undertaken by NBR over the past one and a half years to enhance transparency in tax administration through digitisation.
Senior representatives of multinational companies operating in Bangladesh also spoke at the session.
They stressed the need to simplify and digitise the existing tax policies, broaden the tax base, and ensure a level playing field for all.
They also called for policy decisions in the upcoming budget that balance private sector employment growth with revenue generation.
