Users of mobile financial services (MFS) would be allowed to operate only one account with a single MFS provider against an individual National Identity (NID) number, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said today (6 April).
In a written reply to a query from the Dhaka-18 lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain, on the ninth day of the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, the minister said steps had been taken to ensure that MFS accounts are opened using mobile numbers registered in the account holder’s own NID.
He said the legal procedures for signing a memorandum of understanding between Bangladesh Bank and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission had been completed.
‘Mobile number verification will be launched once the BTRC procures the necessary hardware to support the process,’ he said.
The minister added that the government was aware of scams involving MFS and that Bangladesh Bank was working to strengthen payment system security and curb fraud.
MFS providers have been instructed to raise awareness about scams among clients through text and voice messages as well as media campaigns, he added.
