The government plans to expand the distribution of agricultural loans at lower interest rates, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said today (6 April).
Responding to questions from several lawmakers in parliament, he also said the government has decided to waive loans of up to Tk10,000, including interest, that were previously disbursed to farmers across the country.
However, the finance minister clarified that the government has no plans to fully waive agricultural loans or to introduce interest-free loan schemes for farmers.
To implement the expansion, the government has already allocated Tk1,567.96 crore in the budget, Khosru said. Around 13.17 lakh farmers nationwide are expected to benefit from the measure.
He added that farmers will receive this benefit once the audit by the Bangladesh Bank is completed.
