Authorities imposed Section 144 in an embankment area of Sunamganj Sadar upazila today (4 April) following a clash between two groups over the cutting of a haor embankment that left at least 20 people reportedly injured.
The incident took place at Dakua haor, where tensions escalated after one group allegedly cut an embankment despite a prior agreement reached through discussions with farmers.
Additional District Magistrate Sanjit Kumar Chand said a committee had been formed following talks with local farmers to manage water drainage from the haor. “However, one group ignored the decision and cut the embankment, triggering unrest. Section 144 has been imposed in the embankment area to maintain law and order,” he said.
He added that legal action would be taken against those responsible for cutting the embankment and that the restrictions would remain in force until the situation returns to normal.
Nurul Amin, a union parishad member from Mohonpur village, said, “Residents of his village were attacked when they tried to prevent the embankment from being cut, leaving several people injured.”
Local sources said there had been a long-standing dispute among residents of several villages over the embankment. Today, a meeting was held involving people from Mohonpur and Noagaon villages, chaired by the additional district magistrate, where a committee was formed to resolve the issue.
Soon after the meeting, one group allegedly cut the embankment, leading to a confrontation when the opposing group tried to resist.
