At least 100 people were injured in clashes between people from different villages over a football-related dispute and previous enmity in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila this morning (4 April).
According to locals, the incident took place in the Munsurabad bus stand area under the Hamirdi union.
Local sources said tensions had been brewing for several days after an argument broke out between youths from Munsurabad and neighbouring Khapura village during announcements for a football match.
The dispute reportedly escalated yesterday afternoon when youths from Munsurabad allegedly assaulted two individuals from Khapura.
In retaliation, locals from Khapura attacked and assaulted Munsurabad Market Committee President Jinnat Molla.
Later in the evening, both sides engaged in violent clashes using locally made weapons, sticks, machetes, and bricks. They reportedly used torchlights in the dark while attacking each other. Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
However, clashes resumed this morning, drawing in residents from four villages.
More than 100 people, including a police member, were injured as the violence continued at the time of filing this report. The injured were taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and other local facilities for treatment.
Police said that they are working to bring the situation under control after arriving promptly at the scene.
