A legal notice has been served on Kushtia-3 (Sadar) lawmaker Amir Hamza, demanding that he publicly disclose the identities of individuals who allegedly offered him a Tk50 crore bribe to keep Kushtia Medical College closed.
The notice was sent yesterday (1 April) by Kushtia District Judge Court lawyer Abdul Majid. It calls on the member of parliament (MP) Hamza to reveal the names of those involved or hand them over to law enforcement within seven days.
The notice further states that if the identities are not disclosed or legal action is not taken within the stipulated time, further legal steps will be pursued.
According to the notice, Amir Hamza had claimed at various public gatherings after being elected that he was offered Tk50 crore within three days to keep the medical college shut. He said he rejected the offer, adding that even if “the whole of Kushtia” were written over to him, he would not change his position.
It also mentions that the MP’s remarks, made in February, were widely circulated in national and local media as well as on social media platforms.
Citing both state and Shariah laws, the notice said both the bribe giver and receiver are equally culpable.
“Although rejection of the bribe offer was publicly spoken, not revealing the identities of those involved or not bringing them under the law amounts to shielding offenders,” it said.
