All shops, retail outlets and shopping malls across Bangladesh will be closed by 8pm as part of an energy-saving measure, said owners’ associations.
The decision was announced in a press release issued by the Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity (shop owners’ association) today (2 April).
According to the statement, the move was finalised at a joint meeting of the standing committees of the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association and the Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners Association.
The release said the decision aims to support the government in conserving electricity and fuel in light of the ongoing international energy crisis. As part of this effort, all shops, commercial outlets and shopping malls across the country, including in Dhaka, will shut by 8pm.
However, hotels, pharmacies, essential service providers, and fresh markets will remain exempt from the directive.
Speaking to TBS, Bangladesh Shop Owners Association President Nazmul Hasan Mahmud said the notice is being issued today and will take effect immediately. “Some businesses may not be aware of it today, but from tomorrow, it will be implemented in almost all shopping malls and shops,” he added.
