BNP chief Tarique Rahman spent around Tk23 lakh in the 13th National Parliamentary Election in Dhaka-17 constituency, according to officials of the Election Commission (EC).
Sources at the EC confirmed the information today (30 March), based on the expenditure return submitted by his election agent to the returning officer.
The voting for the 13th parliamentary election was held on 12 February, and the gazette of elected candidates for 297 seats was published the following day. The BNP formed the government after the election, with Tarique Rahman assuming office as prime minister.
According to the submitted account, Tk5.5 lakh was spent on campaign activities, Tk1.1 lakh on transport, and Tk1.8 lakh on organising rallies. Expenditure on election camps stood at Tk3.6 lakh.
Additionally, Tk9.84 lakh was spent on election agents and staff, Tk66,000 on accommodation and administrative costs, and Tk50,000 on social media campaigning.
Dhaka-17 constituency has a total of 3,33,777 voters. Under the Representation of the People Order, 1972, a candidate is allowed to spend up to Tk25 lakh or Tk10 per voter, whichever is higher. Based on this, Tarique Rahman’s spending limit was Tk33.37 lakh.
