The government has taken an initiative to establish a new export processing zone (EPZ) in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria, following a proposal from a local BNP leader.
The development was confirmed in a letter signed by Md Tanvir Hossain, executive director (investment promotion) of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, yesterday (29 March). The letter said necessary steps will be taken in accordance with relevant rules.
The proposal was submitted by Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan, an executive member of the district unit of the ruling BNP. He was also a preliminary nominee of the party for the Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba and Akhaura) constituency in the 13th parliamentary election.
He is also the elder brother of Abdur Rahman Sani, assistant private secretary to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and serves as the chairman of the Bhuiyan Global Foundation.
Earlier, on 24 March, Kabir wrote to the executive chairman of BEPZA, highlighting the importance and feasibility of setting up an EPZ in the Tinlakhpir area of Binauati union under Kasba upazila.
According to the proposal, Tinlakhpir is located near the Cumilla–Sylhet highway and is in close proximity to Akhaura Land Port and Akhaura Railway Junction. Its connectivity with Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet via road and rail makes it a suitable location for sourcing raw materials and transporting finished goods, it said.
The letter also noted the availability of large tracts of government-owned land in the area, making it ideal for establishing an EPZ.
Speaking on the matter, Kabir said, “There is a large amount of khas land in Tinlakhpir. If needed, privately owned land can also be acquired easily. There are also good facilities for waste management. Establishing an EPZ here will transform the economic landscape of Kasba-Akhaura as well as the entire Brahmanbaria district.
“I have contacts with businesspeople from different countries. They have shown interest in investing here. I express my gratitude to the authorities, especially Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, for accepting my proposal. I hope the establishment of an EPZ in Tinlakhpir will mark the beginning of implementing the prime minister’s plan to set up EPZs in every district.”
