Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard detained seven alleged smugglers along with a large quantity of diesel, tar and an illegal artisanal trawling boat during a special operation in Chattogram early yesterday (28 March).
The arrests were made around 3am in the Karnaphuli channel area under Patenga police station, near the 14 No terminal.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a suspicious artisanal trawler and recovered around 1,600 litres of diesel, 3,300 kilograms of tar and four diesel engines.
Confirming the matter, Coast Guard Media Officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Suzan said, “Legal procedures against them are currently underway. The seized trawler and goods have also been taken into custody for further action.”
The seized goods, estimated to be worth about Tk48 lakh, were allegedly being transported to Myanmar while evading duties and taxes.
The official also said the detainees were allegedly involved in smuggling the goods across the border.
The detainees were identified as Md Russel, 29, son of Mainuddin, from Jahajmara in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali; Delowar Hossain, 30, son of Nurul Haque, from Uttar Dhurum in Kutubdia of Cox’s Bazar; Md Akkas, 31, son of Abdus Salam, from Dharmapur in Fatikchhari of Chattogram; Md Jaber, 33, son of Md Zakir, from Charlakshya in Boardbazar of Chattogram; Md Jasim, 35, son of Basu Mia, from South Saguchia in Monpura of Bhola; Md Jahir, 30, son of Dulal Hossain, from Jahajmara in Hatiya of Noakhali; and Md Zakir Hossain, son of Md Chand Mia, from Shanti Bazar in Chakaria of Cox’s Bazar.
