At least 274 people have been killed in road accidents across the country during the 10 days of Eid travel this year, according to the Road Safety Foundation.
In a statement today (27 March), the organisation said the deaths occurred between 17 March and 26 March, during which 342 road accidents were reported nationwide.
It added that the number of fatalities this year has already exceeded that of last year.
According to the data released by the foundation, 249 people were killed in road accidents during the 11-day Eid-ul-Fitr travel period last year.
The organisation also said this year’s Eid travel period will continue until 28 March, after which it will release a detailed report on the overall number of accidents and casualties.
Several major accidents were reported during this year’s Eid travel period.
Among them, 12 people were killed in Cumilla on the night of 21 March after a train collided with a bus. Earlier, two people were killed in an accident involving two launches at Sadarghat on 19 March.
Most recently, 26 people were killed on 25 March when a passenger bus fell into the Padma River while trying to board a ferry at Daulatdia ghat in Rajbari during the return journey after Eid.
