A Rohingya youth was critically injured in a landmine blast along the Anjuman Para border in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place around 12:45pm today (26 March), confirmed Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commander of the Ukhiya-64 BGB battalion.
The injured man, Mohammad Shahidul, 25, is the son of Chan Mia and a resident of Block F-5 of Rohingya Camp No 16 in Ukhiya.
According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the youth left the refugee camp illegally and went fishing in the Naf River near the border.
Quoting local sources, Lt Col Zahirul Islam said, “Shahidul and several others were fishing at the zero line of the Naf River when a powerful explosion suddenly occurred, leaving him critically injured.”
“The blast severed Shahidul’s right ankle and caused serious injuries to various parts of his body,” he added.
Following the incident, locals rescued him and took him to a hospital in Ukhiya.
He was later referred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
