Two men were killed and at least 30 others were injured in a violent clash in Goalnagar village under Goalnagar Union in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria today (24 March), which began around 10:30am and was triggered by a longstanding feud between two rival groups.
As of this report, the clash is still ongoing.
The deceased have been identified as Akter Mia and Habib Mia, while the injured were immediately taken to Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex.
Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Md Abdur Rauf confirmed the incident and said, “The clash was a result of long-standing disputes. Police have been deployed to the scene and are working to bring the situation under control.”
Police and local sources said tensions between the two groups date back to the 13th National Parliament election, when Ziaur Rahman, a BNP supporter and member of the Rahim Talukdar group, was detained over alleged irregularities at the Goalnagar High School polling centre and later sentenced to 10 days in jail by a mobile court.
He subsequently suspected Shishu Mia of the rival Kashem Mia group, fuelling a feud that led to further clashes in recent days.
The dispute culminated in this morning’s violence, where members of both groups used spears and sharp weapons (locally known as teta and ballam), leaving Akter Mia and Habib Mia dead and at least 30 others injured.
A medical professional at the health complex, Shafiqul Islam said, “Two critically injured individuals were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.”
