A madrasa student was critically injured in an explosion involving explosive materials at his residence in Tungipara of Gopalganj last evening (23 March).
The injured, identified as Matiur Rahman, 25, is the son of Mostak Ahmed from the Nilfa Bazar area and a student of Bhabanipur Madrasa in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) under police guard.
According to witnesses, a loud explosion was heard from Motiur’s house yesterday evening.
He was rescued with severe burns on his face, hands and legs and first taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital.
He was later shifted to KMCH for advanced treatment.
However, given the suspicious nature of the incident, he was sent under police escort, accompanied by two members of the local police.
Family members said Matiur was making fireworks for a relative’s wedding when the explosive accidentally went off, blowing off parts of the fingers on his right hand and leaving him with burns on different parts of his body.
“The nature of the wounds does not suggest fireworks. The severity of the injuries indicates a blast from a cocktail or a hand bomb,” said Dr Asim Kumar Dhar, the on-duty doctor at Gopalganj Medical College Hospital.
Ayub Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tungipara Police Station, said, “Police have already inspected the site. A specialist team from Dhaka is arriving to investigate the incident. The exact cause of the explosion will be determined after their assessment.”
