The government is planning to install automatic gates at all railway crossings along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway to improve road safety and prevent fatal accidents, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid.
“In many countries, railway crossings are equipped with automatic gates that close when a train reaches a designated point. Today’s accident occurred because there was no gateman present; with an automated system, such incidents could have been avoided,” he said while visiting the site of a fatal train–bus collision in Cumilla’s Sadar South upazila early today (22 March).
After inspecting the site, the minister said the installation of automated gate systems would be prioritised in an upcoming meeting, with authorities aiming for swift implementation.
He added that the government will take steps to bring all railway crossings on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway under an automated system as quickly as possible.
The visit follows the accident that occurred at around 2:45am in the Padua Bazar Bishwaroad area when a mail train coming from Chattogram collided with a Mamun Paribahan bus at a level crossing, killing seven men, three women and two children.
