Three people were killed and at least five others injured as a bus ploughed through a crowd at Rampur on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Feni early today (22 March).
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Mohipal Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Asadul Islam said repair work was underway on a bridge along the highway and vehicles were moving slowly on the Chattogram-bound lane.
An ambulance was crossing a speed breaker at a slow pace near the bridge when a bus of Shyamoli Paribahan hit it from behind around 3:45am.
Following the collision, an altercation broke out between the bus and ambulance drivers, creating congestion on the highway, with a motorcycle and several other buses getting stuck behind, he said.
During the altercation, a speeding bus of Doel Paribahan ploughed through the crowd, triggering a chain collision, leaving a motorcyclist, a bus supervisor and a passenger dead.
The bodies have been kept at the Feni Sadar Hospital morgue, the OC added.
