The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has asked river ports to hoist warning signals as thunderstorms and gusty winds, driven by Nor’wester storms, are likely across central, northwestern, northeastern and eastern districts today.
The forecast issued today (20 March) said the weather may remain unstable throughout the day.
From 10am to 6pm, temporary squalls with rain or thundershowers may sweep across Dhaka, Faridpur, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet from the west or north-west at speeds of 60-80km/h.
River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 2.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura and Cumilla may experience winds of 45-60km/h with rain or thunderstorms. River ports there have been asked to show signal number 1.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana told The Business Standard that some districts may see strong winds and rainfall, and vessels should move with caution.
Separately, meteorologist Mostofa Kamal Polash, a PhD researcher in meteorology and climate at the University of Saskatchewan, said vessels on southern river routes – including Dhaka-bound and Barishal-bound services – may face strong storms between 12:30pm and 5pm.
He said wind speeds could reach 70-80km/h during this period, with vessels on the Padma and Meghna rivers facing higher risks.
“If possible, vessels should remain anchored until the weather improves, especially as many are carrying passengers beyond capacity ahead of Eid,” he said.
Earlier, the forecast for 24-hour starting from 9am today said parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, along with isolated areas in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram, may see rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds. Hail may occur in some places.
Day temperatures may fall slightly, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
