A Dhaka court today (18 March) placed two accused on a five-day remand each and recorded confessional statements of two others in a case filed over the murder of content creator Rakibul Islam in Dhaka’s central Shaheed Minar area on 15 March.
The accused, Golam Rasul Shihab and Sagar Kabir, confessed to their involvement in the killing of Rakibul Hasan Rakib. Meanwhile, two other accused, Rafin Sheikh and Shahriar Nazim Joy, have been placed on a five-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin recorded the confessional statements and granted the remand.
Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mithu Sarkar, the investigation officer of the case, confirmed the matter.
According to the remand petition, further interrogation is necessary to uncover the motive behind the killing, recover the firearm (pistol) and locally made weapons used in the crime, and identify other accused involved or those who may have instructed the killing.
The investigation officer said, “In the confessional statement application, preliminary findings suggest Shihab and Sagar were directly involved in the murder and carried it out under the instructions of a top criminal named Salauddin from Khulna.”
On 15 March, Rakibul Islam, 25, a second-year undergraduate student of Sheikh Borhanuddin College, was killed around 9pm in front of the central Shaheed Minar area.
Following the incident, his father, Tarikul Islam Khokon, an employee of the University of Dhaka, filed a murder case.
According to the case statement, Rakib went to the Central Shaheed Minar around 8:30pm on his motorcycle. As soon as he parked, he was shot by unidentified assailants armed with firearms and sharp weapons. After he fell to the ground injured, 5–6 attackers stabbed him before fleeing.
Passersby rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
