Police have dismissed reports of a theft at the Bagerhat residence of Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, saying no such incident occurred.
Instead, three individuals were arrested for taking away fallen power cables from outside the property, according to a press release issued today (18 March) by Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Md Hasan Chowdhury.
The arrestees were identified as Robiul Islam, 28, Abdur Kader, 24, and Chanchal Sheikh, 38, all residents of different areas in Bagerhat. Police said the cables have been recovered.
According to the release, the incident took place around 11pm on 16 March, when stormy weather caused a power outage. During the disruption, service wires along the outer wall of the IGP’s residence became disconnected and fell to the ground.
Unidentified individuals later took the fallen wires.
The matter came to the attention of local police through media reports. Following an investigation, law enforcers conducted an operation yesterday, leading to the arrest of the three suspects and recovery of the cables.
SP Hasan Chowdhury said several media outlets had reported the incident as a theft without proper verification.
“These reports came to our notice, but in reality, no theft occurred at the IGP’s house,” he said, adding that such misinformation created confusion among the public.
Police have urged media outlets and the public not to be misled by unverified reports regarding the incident.
