Three people, including a woman and a child from the same family, were killed and nine others injured after a microbus crashed into a highway divider and caught fire in Bogura’s Sherpur upazila this morning (18 March).
The deceased were identified as Shiuli Begum, 48, Tayeba Khatun, 12, and the driver Rintu, 47.
The injured include Fatema, 10, Shahidul, 40, Tausib, 30, Tasmia, 20, Helena, 60, Tarikul, 36, Fatema, 2, Arham, 7, and Hamim, 30. They were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment.
According to local sources and the Fire Service, the accident occurred in the Chonka area under the Sherpur Upazila on the Dhaka-Bogura highway. The victims were traveling from Dhaka to northern districts to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Witnesses said the Hiace microbus lost control and rammed into the highway divider. The impact caused a front tire to burst, and the vehicle subsequently caught fire. One woman died on the spot.
Sherpur Fire Service and Highway Police personnel rushed to the scene, rescued the injured, and transported them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMC), where two others succumbed to their injuries.
Bakhtiar Uddin, warehouse inspector of Sherpur Fire Service, said, “We responded immediately after receiving the news and managed to extinguish the fire quickly. One person died on the spot, and two more died later at the hospital.”
