Bangladesh has sought France’s support for its candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 2026–2027 term, highlighting the country’s ambition to play a more prominent role in global governance.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the request during a courtesy call by the French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka this afternoon (16 March).
During the meeting, the ambassador congratulated the state minister on assuming her new responsibilities and expressed optimism that relations between Bangladesh and France would be further strengthened during her tenure.
Shama Obaed Islam acknowledged France’s longstanding development cooperation with Bangladesh across a wide range of sectors.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the broader framework of cooperation, including trade and investment, climate action, education and skills development, women empowerment, connectivity, and global peace and security.
They also exchanged views on regional and international developments, emphasising dialogue, mutual respect, restraint and adherence to international law as pillars for maintaining global stability.
The state minister further highlighted Bangladesh’s interest in exploring additional avenues to deepen trade and investment ties with the European Union, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of Bangladeshi exports in the EU market.
Ambassador Séré Charlet reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh and advancing their shared vision of peace, prosperity and progress.
