Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a large quantity of foreign liquor worth around Tk10 lakh from the residence of a local Mohila Dal leader in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat.
During the drive, the leader’s husband was arrested after reportedly attempting to flee the scene.
According to a press release issued by Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Coast Guard West Zone, a total of 197 bottles of foreign liquor were recovered during the drive conducted yesterday night (13 March) near Chila Bazar in Mongla upazila.
The arrested individual has been identified as Abhijit Parai Shanto. He is the husband of Tania Biswas Lithi, vice-president of Mongla upazila unit of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.
Tania admitted that the liquor was recovered from their house but claimed that the consignment did not belong to them. She told reporters that her husband, a ward-level BNP member, had kept the liquor at the request of an acquaintance. However, she did not disclose the person’s identity.
Commenting on the incident, Mongla upazila Mohila Dal General Secretary Lipi Begum said criminals cannot be shielded by political affiliation.
“If anyone is involved in drugs, the law will take its course regardless of their position in the party,” she said, adding that organisational action may be taken after discussions with senior party leaders.
The Coast Guard said the recovered liquor and the arrestee were handed over to Mongla Police Station for further legal action.
