Journalist Anis Alamgir was released today (14 March) from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur, two days after securing bail.
The release was confirmed by Md Al Mamun, jail superintendent of part-2 of the jail, who said Alamgir’s bail papers arrived yesterday. After verification, he was released today at around 2:35pm, with his wife and relatives present at the jail.
Alamgir had been granted bail earlier on 11 March by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Foyez following a hearing.
On the night of 14 December last year, he was taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch office from a gym in Dhanmondi for questioning.
The next day, he was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act by Uttara West Police.
After being placed on five days’ remand, he was placed in jail.
The High Court granted him bail in the case on 5 March.
In a separate case, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed charges against Alamgir on 15 January, accusing him of acquiring wealth beyond known sources worth Tk3,26,48,938.
On 25 January, the ACC applied for his arrest, which the court approved.
Alamgir also secured bail in this case later.
