Two children died after an old wall collapsed on them while they were playing in a narrow lane in North Badda of the capital today (11 March).
The deceased were identified as Ayesha Moni, 10, and Nusrat Jahan Mariam, 5, Officer-in-Charge of Badda Police Station Kazi Md Nasirul Amin confirmed to The Business Standard.
According to the OC, the incident took place on a narrow road between two houses where even rickshaws cannot enter.
He said an old house belonging to a man living in Italy was being demolished when one of its walls suddenly collapsed on the children.
The two children were rescued by locals and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:45pm, where doctors declared them dead, Nasirul said.
Police are preparing to file a murder case over the incident, the OC added.
Ayesha’s father, Iqbal Hossain, said the two children were playing near their house in the lane where an old building was being demolished to construct a new one.
“An old wall was still standing beside the road, and bricks and sand were stacked on the inner side. Around 11am the wall suddenly collapsed on the two children,” he said.
“I myself work with masonry. We build and paint walls for people’s future, yet today my daughter died under a wall,” he said.
Nusrat’s father, Md Sharif, also a mason, said his only daughter died after being crushed under the collapsed wall.
