A 14-year-old schoolboy was killed after being hit by a pickup van in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area this afternoon (11 March).
The victim, Nur Nabi, a class eight student at a local school, was struck while crossing the road near Kalam Mia’s slum around 4pm, according to the Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
Police said the pickup van fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Nur Nabi’s father, Rafiqul Islam, told The Business Standard that his son had left home in the afternoon to go out and play.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon Division) Ibne Mizan said locals informed the family and police shortly after the incident that a pickup van had hit the boy while he was crossing the road in front of the slum before fleeing.
“Police are investigating the incident,” he added.
The injured boy was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 5:30pm, said Inspector Md Farouk, in-charge of the DMCH outpost at the hospital.
“The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy,” he said.
