At least 15 shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at a market in Tongi of Gazipur last night (5 March).
The fire broke out around 11:45pm at Ma Chofurennesa Market on Anarkali Road in Tongi Bazar area, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Locals first noticed flames and informed the fire service.
On information, four units from the Tongi Fire Service and two units from Uttara Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after nearly one and a half hours of efforts.
Fire service officials said shops selling chemicals, curtains, bicycles, hardware items and electronic goods were among those damaged in the incident.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the losses could not be determined immediately, said Abdul Mannan, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service (Dhaka Zone-3).
