The process is underway to appoint a new governor at Bangladesh Bank in place of Ahsan H Mansur, according to sources at the Ministry of Finance.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has reportedly given his consent after the ministry’s Financial Institutions Division (FID) submitted a proposal in this regard, the sources told The Business Standard this afternoon (25 February).
The proposal has been sent from the finance ministry to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval, said the sources. Once the prime minister approves, it will be sent to the President’s Office, following which a gazette notification will be issued.
Meanwhile, at around 2pm, Governor Mansur left the central bank premises after attending some regular office work and a press briefing.
When asked whether he had resigned, Mansur told reporters, “I have not resigned, nor have I been removed. I saw it in the media, so I am going home.”
FID Secretary Nazma Mobarek also met the finance minister at his office at around 1:45pm. Responding to questions as she was leaving, she told reporters, “Please wait. I do not want to say anything right now. You will know if anything happens.”
Ministry sources said the proposed new governor is currently a faculty member at a university in the United States. The appointment of the new governor will be finalised today after completion of the process.
