Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid today (18 February) said agriculture, fisheries, and livestock are the main pillars of the national economy, stressing that integrated planning and effective implementation in these sectors would strengthen the country’s economy.
“If we can ensure integrated planning and effective implementation in these sectors, the country’s overall economy will become stronger and more resilient,” he said.
Amin Ur Rashid, also the agriculture minister, made the remarks while addressing a view-exchange meeting with officials at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock this afternoon.
He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman gives the highest priority to agricultural development, believing economic stability largely depends on progress in the agriculture sector.
Referring to Bangladesh’s favourable climate, the minister said many countries remain snow-covered for six to eight months yet have attained developed status. “In contrast, Bangladesh can produce crops throughout the year.”
He urged all concerned to work together to transform Bangladesh into a prosperous and developed nation and underscored the need for coordinated initiatives by experienced officials to position the country prominently in global agricultural production.
He said the government is committed to public welfare and meeting people’s expectations, noting the vast potential for agricultural exports and the effective use of climate and natural resources to boost overseas markets.
He stressed the importance of a corruption-free and professional working environment, saying collective dedication could usher in a new milestone for the sector.
Speaking at the meeting, State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said a democratic government has been established through a credible election, raising public expectations. Learning from past administrative limitations, the present government is committed to discharging its responsibilities with honesty and dedication.
He noted that canals, beels, rivers, and other water bodies are the primary reservoirs of the country’s fish resources. “However, many have been filled or encroached upon, which is deeply concerning. Effective measures must be taken to identify, recover, and conserve these resources,” he added.
The state minister said the ministry would provide maximum support if officials perform their duties properly, emphasizing that mutual understanding and collective efforts are essential for achieving development goals.
Secretary Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber and senior officials from various departments were also present.
