A leader of the Uzirpur municipal unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal has been sent to jail and expelled from the organisation after locals caught him allegedly trying to secretly film a woman in a bathroom in Barishal.
Bayazid Mithu, joint convener of the Uzirpur municipal unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, was detained by residents in the municipal area around 10pm yesterday (7 November), beaten and handed over to police.
Police filed a case against him under the Pornography Control Act, and a court sent him to jail today (8 November).
Three eyewitnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a woman from a neighbouring household had gone to the bathroom when Bayazid allegedly tried to record her through a gap in the ventilator using his mobile phone.
The woman noticed him and screamed, prompting locals to rush in and detain him. The witnesses said they found secret recordings of several women on his phone, after which an angry crowd beat him.
Local resident Mohammad Alauddin said Bayazid had been trying to film a housewife through the bathroom ventilator when she noticed him and raised the alarm.
Police arrived, rescued him from the crowd and took him to Uzirpur Model Police Station. Police said they found numerous pornographic videos in two galleries on his phone.
Locals also alleged that Bayazid had secretly filmed women through windows and bathroom ventilators in different homes for a long time and had attempted to use the recordings to blackmail them and coerce them into sexual acts. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Uzirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibul Islam said police filed the case as the complainant and that Bayazid was sent to jail through the court around noon today.
Meanwhile, Barishal district Swechchhasebak Dal expelled Bayazid from its primary membership and all organisational posts for activities contrary to party discipline, according to a press release issued on Sunday.
District Convener Rafiqul Islam Joni and Member Secretary Md Kamrul Ahsan approved the decision. The release was signed by Office Secretary Zahidul Islam Khan.
