Several crude bomb explosions rocked Dhaka University campus and adjoining areas this evening (8 November), with eight to nine blasts reported at different locations.
The explosions occurred between 6:15pm and 6:45pm, said Dhaka University Proctor Associate Professor Israfil Ratan.
Police have detained three individuals in connection with the incidents. They were identified as Rezaul Karim, 42, from Natore; Sohel Rana, 33, from Rajshahi; and Nazmus Sad, 33, from Gopalganj.
The blasts took place at the university’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Nilkhet, the gate of the Senate Building, and on roads in front of Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall and Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.
The university’s proctorial team detained a suspected person at TSC and handed him over to Shahbagh Police Station, Israfil Ratan said.
His identity could not immediately be established, he added.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman said police had detained one person in connection with an explosion beneath the metro rail station at TSC.
“He is being questioned. Details will be shared later,” he said.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (New Market Zone) Md Nasim A-Gulshan confirmed an explosion in front of the Mukti O Gonotantra Toron at Nilkhet, saying he was on his way to the scene.
