A woman has confessed to her involvement in the killing of her ex-husband, who was allegedly beaten and dumped beside the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Chandanaish Upazila.
The accused Ayesha Akhter, 35, was arrested on Thursday night (5 November) in a murder case filed over the death of Mohammad Hashem, 37. Police said she later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Anwara Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mahmudul Hasan confirmed the details to The Business Standard today (7 November).
“Locals saw Hashem lying in a bloodied condition beside Barumati Bridge on the highway around 7am on Thursday. Police went to the spot after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999. Blood was flowing from his right leg. He was rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the ASP said.
According to Hashem’s family, he had been involved in a long-running domestic dispute with Ayesha, and the couple eventually divorced. Hashem went to his former in-laws’ house on Wednesday night, where his ex-wife and several local people beat him.
The family further alleged that he was taken in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and dumped beside Barumati Bridge around 5am on Thursday.
Hashem’s father filed the murder case, accusing five to seven people, including Ayesha, of involvement in the killing.
Chandanaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Didarul Islam Sikder said preliminary investigations had found the involvement of several people, including Ayesha, in Hashem’s death.
“Based on the findings, we conducted a raid and arrested Ayesha. Efforts are underway to arrest the others involved. The incident is under investigation,” he said.
