A Dhaka court today (7 November) sent Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip to jail after he completed three rounds of remand in the murder case over the death of former air force officer Tahsif Sauri.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam passed the order after rejecting Dwip’s bail petition. Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam confirmed the matter.
Earlier in the day, Dwip was produced before the court after the end of his latest three-day remand. Investigation Officer Firoz Uddin, an inspector at the Tongi River Police Outpost, sought an order to keep him in jail custody until the investigation is completed.
In his plea seeking Dwip’s detention in jail, the investigation officer said he had provided several important pieces of information about the incident during questioning. The details were being kept confidential and verified as part of the investigation.
The plea also said Dwip had avoided answering several questions during interrogation and remained silent on certain matters.
It further stated that Tahsif, Dwip and Jerika Tasnim Disha had been seen visiting different places and restaurants together before the incident.
An examination of CCTV footage, mobile phone call records and other evidence collected so far showed that Tahsif was last seen with Dwip and Disha before his death, the plea said.
The investigating officer said the evidence pointed to their possible involvement in the case and argued that Dwip needed to remain in jail custody to ensure a proper investigation, uncover the circumstances of the death and identify and arrest those responsible.
The court rejected the bail petition after hearing arguments from both sides. Lawyers for Dwip sought bail, while the prosecution opposed the petition.
According to the case documents, Tahsif went missing after leaving home on the evening of 27 October in response to a call from Dwip, described as his junior friend. The following afternoon, River Police recovered his body from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River.
As investigators traced Tahsif’s movements on the night he went missing, CCTV footage from Nest Restaurant & Bar in Uttara showed him arriving there with Disha at 10:17pm, followed shortly afterwards by Dwip. The three spent about an hour and a half at the restaurant before Tahsif and Dwip left for Mazar Basti in Tongi.
On 30 October, Tahsif’s father, KM Enayetul Karim, filed a murder case against unidentified persons at Uttarkhan Police Station. Police later showed Dwip arrested in connection with the case as a suspect.
The court first granted Dwip four days of remand on 31 October, followed by three days on 3 November and another three days on 5 November.
