An Armed Police Battalion (APBN) member was allegedly brutally beaten, leaving his arms and legs broken and a tendon in one leg severed, by suspected drug traders in Rupganj, Narayanganj, over his opposition to drug-related activities in his neighbourhood.
Abul Kalam, 35, sustained serious injuries in the attack in North Masabo area of Tarabo Municipality in Rupganj upazila around 11pm yesterday (5 November), confirmed Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge AHM Salahuddin.
He is currently receiving treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.
According to his family, Kalam was on leave and staying at his village home when the attackers targeted him.
His sister, Sumaiya Akter, said drug trading and gatherings of drug users regularly took place beside their home, prompting her brother to repeatedly protest against the activities.
She alleged that Kalam had recently helped police arrest two suspected drug traders, Shahadat Hossain, 32, and Emdadul Haque, 29.
After Kalam returned home on leave, associates of Shahadat and Emdad allegedly attacked him at night, breaking his arms and legs and severing a tendon in one of his legs with a sharp weapon, she claimed.
His father, Abdul Malek, said a man named Shahjalal called his son on Thursday night and asked him to meet near a nearby low-lying waterbody.
“He was attacked there. His arms and legs were broken, and the tendons in his leg were severed. Hearing his screams, local residents rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee,” he said.
OC AHM Salahuddin said Kalam was serving as an APBN member in Habiganj district and had been attacked by suspected drug traders after returning home on leave.
He added that no complaint had been filed with the police station over the incident by the time this report was filed.
