Health State Minister Dr MA Muhit has called for the establishment of a dedicated national institute for hormone-related disorders, urging specialist doctors to build support for the proposal and prepare a concrete plan in consultation with the health ministry.
He made the call while speaking as the chief guest at the ninth International Endocrine Conference at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka this evening (6 November). The conference was organised by the Bangladesh Endocrine Society.
The state minister said leading institutions such as BIRDEM, Bangladesh Medical University and Dhaka Medical College were already doing extensive work on endocrinology. However, a full-fledged national institute was needed given the large number of people suffering from diabetes, thyroid disorders and other hormone-related complications.
“Given the importance and relevance of this field, a concrete proposal for establishing a full-fledged institute needs to be prepared through discussions with the ministry,” he said, urging specialists to highlight the need for such an institution.
The state minister also called on young doctors to focus on research into diabetes, thyroid disorders and obesity, which cover a significant part of human physiology and pathology.
He expressed hope that young Bangladeshi researchers would work jointly with international researchers and publish the country’s data and research in internationally recognised journals.
Muhit also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working to unite the country and move away from the divisions and culture of disrespect that had emerged in different sectors, including healthcare.
“This positive practice will help advance society and the health sector,” he said.
