A Dhaka court today (6 November) sent 19-year-old Jerika Tasnim Disha to jail after she completed two rounds of remand in the murder case over the death of former air force officer Tahsif Sauri.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order. Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam confirmed the matter.
Earlier in the day, Disha was produced before the court after the end of her remand. Investigation Officer Firoz Uddin, an inspector at the Tongi River Police Outpost, sought an order to keep her in jail custody until the investigation is completed.
There was no bail petition on Disha’s behalf during the hearing.
In his plea seeking Disha’s detention in jail, the investigation officer said she had provided several important pieces of information about the incident during questioning. The details are kept confidential and verified as part of the investigation.
The plea also said Disha had avoided answering several questions during interrogation and remained silent on certain matters.
It further stated that another suspect in the case, Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip, is in police custody on remand and that investigators need to cross-check the statements given by Disha and Dwip to identify similarities and discrepancies.
The investigation officer’s earlier forwarding report had said an examination of Tahsif’s mobile phone call records revealed several calls between him and Disha.
According to the plea, the preliminary investigation had also found evidence suggesting Disha’s involvement in the murder.
The investigating officer argued that Disha could go into hiding and hamper the investigation if released on bail.
He also said she might need to be questioned again on remand to uncover the motive and establish the circumstances of the murder.
According to the case documents, Tahsif went missing after leaving home on the evening of 27 October in response to a call from his junior friend Dwip. The following afternoon, River Police recovered his body from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River.
On 29 October, the Police Bureau of Investigation took Dwip into custody for questioning over Souri’s death.
As investigators traced Tahsif’s movements on the night he went missing, CCTV footage from Nest Restaurant & Bar in Uttara showed Tahsif arriving there with Disha at 10:17pm, followed shortly afterwards by Dwip. The three spent about an hour and a half at the restaurant before Tahsif and Dwip left for Mazar Basti in Tongi.
On 30 October, Tahsif’s father, KM Enayetul Karim, filed a murder case against unidentified persons at Uttarkhan Police Station. Police later showed Dwip arrested in connection with the case as a suspect.
On 31 October, Disha was arrested from the capital’s Kafrul area around 2am. The court granted her four days of remand on 1 November and another three days on 4 November.
