A housewife was allegedly strangled to death by her husband following a dispute over suspicions of extramarital affairs in Shantala village of Jashore Sadar upazila early today (6 November).
The deceased was identified as Shahanara Khatun, 30, wife of Atiar Rahman, a resident of the village.
According to family sources, the couple, who have a son and a daughter, divorced two years ago over mutual suspicions of infidelity but reconciled six months later.
However, marital discord resurfaced between them.
The couple’s son, Rayhan, said an altercation broke out between his parents in the early hours of Friday. At one point, Atiar physically assaulted Shahanara and strangled her with a towel at around 5:30am.
Dr Rajib Roy Chowdhury of Jashore General Hospital confirmed that Shahanara died of strangulation and that her body bore marks of physical injuries.
Officer-in-Charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station Md Kabir Hossain said the body had been sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy and that the suspect had been detained.
