A remand prisoner accused in a murder case has reportedly died by suicide at Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur.
The prisoner, identified as Raju, allegedly hanged himself using a gamcha (cotton towel) tied to the door of a prison toilet yesterday afternoon (5 November), according to prison authorities.
Raju was the son of Ainal Haque of Bhaulaganj village in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh district. He was being held as an undertrial prisoner in a murder case (Prisoner No. 9423/26).
Halima Akter, senior jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2, said Raju hanged himself from the toilet door at around 2:15pm yesterday. An on-duty prison guard later found him hanging and rescued him in an unconscious state.
According to prison sources, he was immediately taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for treatment after his condition was assessed.
However, doctors declared him dead at around 3:45pm following examination. The hospital’s death certificate cited “hanging” as the cause of death.
Hospital sources said Raju was brought to the facility dead. His body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Confirming the incident, Gazipur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Md Sohel Rana said the prison authorities had requested the appointment of a magistrate to prepare an inquest report on the deceased.
“A magistrate has already been appointed,” he said.
He added that the inquest report would be prepared and the autopsy conducted this morning (6 November).
